On Jan 18th, 2014, 23 LFQG members got together to learn wool applique and embellishments on cotton. The very talented Jill Buckley was our teacher and the designer of the project that we worked on.

Jill’s Samples Jill told us about different ways of marking the applique design onto the cotton. One of her preferred methods is using the “Pounce” chalk method. With Jill’s help, the design was quickly “pounced” onto all of our cotton background fabric.
The applique pieces were then cut from the wool and whip stitched onto the cotton using a fine and matching thread. Jill taught us 6 embroidery stitches (running stitch, seed stitch, blanket stitch, fly stitch, French knot and bullion stitch). After a discussion about different threads and the best way to use them, we were turned loose to use our own creativity and imagination to embellish our wall hanging.

At the end of the day, Jill gave a short talk about dying your own threads to allow you to get more variations then are available commercially.
It was a fun and inspiring day. It was great to learn (or attempt to learn) some new skills and to slow things down a bit and do some handwork.
