Members were welcomed to the meeting at 7:00 pm by President, Sharon R.
Michealanne Hathaway, owner of Stache Fabric & Notions was introduced as the vendor. Michealanne announced her shop has expanded and will have a big celebration for their opening day on January 25th.
Guest Speaker & Trunk Show Anne Lyons is a member of our Guild, a long arm quilter, a teacher and a grandmother. Anne encourages quilters to stretch their boundaries to what they love but are afraid to try.
Quilts shown included the first quilt made from polyester that was tied, a change pad with bunting ties for her daughter in 1982, an appliquéd quilt for her son in 1984 and one made for her grandmother with handprints and embroidered names of grandchildren. In the early 1990’s, she took a course at Duthlers Textiles and she learned how to choose fabric. The quilt was never quilted. Each quilt she’s made along the way has taught her a lesson: pick a focus, not to free motion on a domestic machine for a Queen sized quilt, directional borders and how to piece, taking ugliest fabric you can find and creating a One Block Wonder, quilt hangers made from prairie points and using buttons, how to use white or cream colours so they appear in either the foreground or background, how to place colours so they are pleasing to the eye, using panels, etc. Since Anne likes small pieces, she showed a quilt top with 9,953 pieces that won Best in Show for her accurate piecing and 1/4” seams. Approximately 50 quilts were in the trunk show, including a Pink Elephant she just finished for the Paper Piecing Workshop on Saturday.
Sharon R. thanked Anne and members were encouraged to sign up for the Saturday Workshop, shop at vendor and see a demonstration on confetti quilting by Libby V.
Vice President
Mary W. read a thank you card and note from My Sisters’ Place for the personal needs we donated. It contained several signatures and comments that our generosity is appreciated.
Program
Kim went home sick so Yvonne, Social Media Coordinator, reported the upcoming workshops are on the Blog and Facebook. Workshop on Saturday on Paper Piecing is $ 45 and still had vacancies. Feb. 15 Libby Valeriani’s workshop will be done and signup sheets are available.
Outreach
Edith encouraged members to sign out kits as many are needed. Children’s Aid received 11 so far this year, not as many as in past years and Rotholme received only 9 quilts and pillowcases.
Reminder there is a Rummage Sale next meeting and items should be priced to sell.
Quilt Show
Lorna M. reminded membership Quilt Show is October 23 and 24. Next week the first meeting of serious planning to be held. Members should start thinking of what they’d like to enter into the Show.
– Sharon G., Boutique Coordinator, co-chairing with Sharon R. announced the Goal is to raise
$ 2,000 and to fill 3 large totes by the April meeting. There will be a donation box at every meeting. For ideas on what to donate: artists of every genre, not limited to quilting, see Facebook for postings, consider Christmas themed items and see Pinterest “LFQG Boutique 2020” board. There will be a Special Workshop to make items. Members encouraged to create an item for a gift or themselves and several for the Boutique.
The hardest part, as per Mibsie who ran the Boutique last time, is to get donations earlier. Remember, if you like it, the Boutique needs it!
