Review the terminology, tools and basic techniques for accurate cutting and piecing.  Learn rotary cutter safety, and demystify rulers for precision measuring.

Build or refresh your piecing skills with techiques like the elusive scant 1/4″, string piecing, strip sets, bias seams, seam alignment, squaring up.  We will also tackle some pressing matters.

Patterns will be provided to test piece 6″ classic quilt blocks such as:  bow tie, 9 patch, pinwheel, snowball, hourglass, flying geese, which could be used to create a sampler by adding sashing, cornerstones and borders. Learn how to finish it with simple machine quilting and binding.  (Additional patterns available for a small fee)

Supplies list 

  • sewing machine in good working order, bobbins, size 90/14 needle.
  • 1/4″ foot and a walking foot are helpful but not necessary
  • rotary cutter and mat
  • rotary cutting rulers – 6 1/2 x 24″ and a square ruler min. 6 1/2″ or larger.
  • scissors, pins, stitch remover, pencils – light and dark
  • thread – neutral
Fabrics
  • 4 to 8 pieces  .25 to .50 mtr approx.  or fat quarters, plus scraps …select a coordinated mix of light/med/dark prints and solids.
  • Optional if later you wish to make a sampler quilt from your test blocks 
    • .35 mtr for sashing – solid
    • .35 mtr for outside borders
    • 1 mtr for backing/binding – coordinating
    • 1 mtr batting  45″ wide
